Liverpool FC - The Reds

Postby johnny75 » Sun 13. Jul 2008, 12:48

How have we overlooked Liverpool for about one month? :o
It's about time to bring this thread back, I won't bother about a nice introduction now though. ;)

Let's jump right into the discussion!

Liverpool sign keeper Cavalieri

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has made Palmeiras keeper Diego Cavalieri his latest summer recruit.

The 25-year-old was born in Brazil but has an Italian passport and has signed a four-year contract.

He joins full-backs Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degen as the other signings for the Reds so far in the close season.

He will be understudy to number one Pepe Reina at Anfield and his arrival suggests Benitez will allow keeper Scott Carson to move on.

"I know it won't be easy to get into the team," Cavalieri told Liverpool's official website.

"I know I will have to be patient and work very hard to achieve my aims - but it is always like that when you come from another country.

"You have to adapt inside and outside of the pitch and get used to the way things work but with hard work you get there.

"I am sure that one day I can get the number one position but that will only come with hard work."

Cavalieri joins fellow Brazilians Lucas Leiva and Fabio Aurelio at Anfield.

He added: "It was a dream for me to come to Europe, though I was taken aback by how quickly everything happened. It's all been sorted out in one week.

"But I have been given a very good welcome from my team-mates and the manager, so I'm very happy to be here. I just hope I can respond to all this.

"Rafa and I spoke for a long time on the day I arrived. He explained to me how the football is here and the differences from Brazil. He also talked to me about the responsibilities of representing a club like Liverpool."

Decent deals for Liverpool so far but those are not the moves that suggest a big improvement next season so Rafa has still some work to do. It is good to see that Carson might be allowed to leave for good, he can do better than sitting on the bench which he showed last season so hopefully he can continue to play first team football.

True that, Liverpool and Arsenal as well will find it tough to overcome Chelsea and Man Utd when they do not make something about their squads. Good squads of course but not good enough (yet) to win the Premiership title.

they do need to add more good depth to the team. they are *as always* on a good road, but for gods sake, go after the good fruits out there. if liverpool wants to get over the bloody "this is our season" joke, then they have to actually start moving the butts on the transfermarket. so far i did not see them doing that.

Well, the big 4 are pretty quite on the transfer market in general, mate.
So they can't get that much better but won't get much weaker too. This suggests little movement position wise among the top 4 clubs.

Yep, Alonso is on his way out. Hardly got any games last season and if Liverpool sign Barry the chances of him getting playing minutes are little.

How awesome Liverpool. U get Xabi used to teh English style, then let him go. Arsenal like and not the way u overcome all teams in this league so Liverpool will be in for another CL qualification round in 2009 it seems.
3rd or 4th place is theirs.

Liverpool have so much tradition. Money is available as well and therefore Rafa should be able to attract more huge signings like Torres to sign for Liverpool.
Rafa has some great players with e.g. Carragher, Gerrard and Torres. That's a good base to build a winning team on and the addition of Torres was a step forward for Liverpool. Now what Liverpool lack is more quality around them.
A second great striker would do them well and some more faith in players who can make a difference such as Alonso or Babel.
Sissoko can be a warrior on the pitch and any team needs a few players like him. Shame he was sold, could have been an important factor when you want to win the league.

Well Torres was the big deal last season and I remember everyone saying Liverpool need someone better than Crouch. I think the signing of Keane is exactly what people were asking for. He is awesome, top class striker, he knows the EPL and him and Torres should finally bring back the glory days again.
One striker is of course not enough to get the title, but another great step for the Reds. I will keep my fingers crossed that Torres and Keane will click really good together. They might end being my new fave striking force.

Very well said Adriana.
Keane and Torres should make a brilliant striking force and that's one of those signings that Liverpool need to get better.
The deal probably doesn't make them a contender right away but the team as a whole is clearly stronger now.
